A shelter in Kirovohrad region is already welcoming its first residents

The first internally displaced Ukrainians have moved into the shelter that Rokada set up in Kazarnia, Kirovohrad region.

The village of Kazarnia in the Subottsi community is 30 kilometres from the regional centre. The community is small.

Rokada set up a shelter for internally displaced Ukrainians in a former school building.

The work included converting classrooms into rooms, modernising bathrooms, including for people with limited mobility and people with disabilities, and creating a kitchen.

The Foundation also provided the facility with furniture, appliances and everything else needed for people to live comfortably.

Two elderly men from Donetsk region have now settled here. They are the first residents of the new shelter – 71-year-old Serhii Oleksandrovych from Kostiantynivka and 72-year-old Oleksandr Viktorovych from Toretsk.

The pensioners are now settling in. The Subottsi community helps the men with everyday life. Breakfast is brought to them every morning, while they make lunch and dinner themselves.

“The family doctor has already been. She examined them, listened to their complaints and prescribed medicines. We take care of them, help with cooking and laundry, and keep things tidy,” says shelter worker Svitlana Vasylivna.

Rokada set up the temporary accommodation facility last year. The repairs covered the rooms, kitchen and bathrooms. The shelter was equipped with furniture and household appliances.

The men have settled in room No. 7, which is designed for two residents.

“The road to Kazarnia was long. Before that, I lived for some time in several transit shelters,” Serhii Oleksandrovych says about the evacuation. “In Kostiantynivka I had a nice flat. Now the city is turning into ruins.”

“When will I be able to go home?” Oleksandr Viktorovych immediately asks the Rokada team. “Yes, I know that there is practically nothing left of the city. But I want to go home.”

There are currently 51 vacant places in the shelter. Residents are moving in gradually – the process is managed by the Kirovohrad Regional Military Administration.
