Educators of the Romny community learned to provide psychological first aid to people who have experienced gender-based violence

Rokada psychologist Tetiana Matviienko taught teaching staff of the Romny community in Sumy region to recognise a crisis state and provide psychological first aid to survivors of gender-based violence.

More than a dozen educators deepened their understanding of people’s psychological reactions to violence, learned the principles of psychological first aid and the procedure for safe response, and practised the skills of active listening, empathetic communication, stabilising a person in crisis and identifying their needs.

“It is teachers, teaching assistants and other educators who work with children every day that are often the first to notice signs of violence – changes in behaviour, anxiety, isolation. But noticing is not enough. It is important to know how to respond without causing harm. That is why we practise the procedures – from how to stabilise a person in crisis and maintain confidentiality to how to refer the case in time to specialists: psychological, social, medical or juvenile services, depending on the need,” explains Tetiana Matviienko.

The project is implemented by the Rokada Charitable Foundation with the support of Agenzia Italiana per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo (AICS) in partnership with the Bukovinian Agency for Initiatives and Development (BAID) and Un Ponte Per ETS (UPP).
