Family evacuated from Pokrovsk rebuilds home for children fleeing war

In May last year, 47-year-old Vladyslav and his parents evacuated from Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region to Krasna Polyana in the Kirovohrad region. The village is small, with about 500 residents. It is located close to the district center.

Vladyslav says the most important thing is that the village is safe, as he has been caring for his two nieces for the past six months. The girls are 11 and 15 years old.

“Yana and Myroslava arrived in December 2025. They come from a large family. Their siblings and mother remained under occupation. What happened to them is unknown, and there is no communication. Here, the girls have the opportunity to study, live in safety, have friends, and enjoy a childhood far away from Russian shelling,” Vladyslav states.

In the village, the family settled into an old house. They renovated it entirely themselves and at their own expense, driven by one main priority — to make sure the girls were comfortable.

“We met the family in the spring. First of all, we immediately noticed how much Vladyslav, the grandmother, and the grandfather surrounded the girls with care. They try to create conditions for them to feel as comfortable as possible. We worked extensively with the family to resolve all priority social matters and provided psychological support,” says Mariia Marchenko, a social worker at the Rokada regional office.

Despite working, Vladyslav continues to renovate the house in his spare time.

“I have just installed indoor plumbing and built a bathroom. The girls cannot use an outdoor toilet — their health comes first!” he notes.

Recently, the Rokada team delivered the necessary renovation materials to the family.

“We delivered putty, paint, and fittings. So in the near future, they will completely renovate three rooms,” the social worker continues. “I must admit, our entire team is rooting for this family. We rejoice in their successes, and we deeply hope that the next chapter of their life will be a happy one.”
