Forum in Geneva: Ukrainian humanitarian practices as a basis for new international standards

The discussion on the evacuation of civilians and the protection of humanitarian workers and volunteers goes far beyond individual operational decisions. It is about shaping approaches that will determine people’s safety, the sustainability of response systems and the accountability of states and organisations in crisis contexts.

The Rokada Charitable Foundation joined the international forum “Evacuations of Civilians and Protection of Humanitarian Workers: Lessons Learnt from Ukraine”, held in Geneva – one of the world’s key venues for shaping humanitarian policy. Today Ukraine is not only a recipient of aid but also a full partner of the international community that shares its knowledge, solutions and proven approaches.

The invited teams presented a practical model of response during a full-scale war: evacuation from frontline areas, procedures after shelling, coordination between the state and the charitable sector, rapid response mechanisms, and tools for collecting and analysing needs.

“The resilience of humanitarian assistance is impossible without the resilience of teams. Our country’s non-governmental organisations work in an extremely difficult environment today, and the ‘Duty of Care’ approach should become not just a temporary solution or an optional extra but the basis for a sustainable social package for humanitarian workers,” notes Anastasiia Ohorodnik, Head of Humanitarian Programmes at the Rokada Charitable Foundation.

For the Foundation, this international platform became an opportunity not only to present Ukraine’s experience of working in wartime but also to contribute to shaping shared modern approaches to protecting civilians and humanitarian workers.

“We express our sincere gratitude to our partners – the Relief Coordination Centre – for organising the forum and for consistently creating platforms that strengthen partnership between international and national organisations. It is this kind of cooperation that builds shared responsibility and increases the effectiveness of the humanitarian system!” stresses Yuliia Maliukhova, specialist of the Partnerships and Fundraising Department at the Rokada Charitable Foundation.

The event was held by the Coordination Humanitarian Centre within the volunteer insurance project “Hear Everyone II”, implemented with the support of Switzerland.
