Strengthening the power supply and improving medical services: Rokada launches a new project in Sumy region

The Rokada Charitable Foundation team is implementing a new initiative to develop the healthcare system in the Yampil community of Sumy region. The activities are part of the “Capable and Strong: Sumy” project implemented by the East Europe Foundation and will run until 28 July 2026. The main goal is to ensure the autonomous and uninterrupted operation of the local hospital, improve the professional competences of medical staff and inform residents of the region about available assistance.

One of the challenges facing the local population is the heavy workload of the Yampil territorial hospital, as residents of the neighbouring Svesa and Druzhba communities also come here. Because of constant Russian shelling, the risk of power outages is quite high, so the hospital needs greater autonomy to keep working without interruption. In addition, unfortunately, the number of people affected by the war keeps growing, so professional help from medical staff is a critical need.

The Rokada team has planned a number of project activities to help solve these problems:

  • Installing additional solar panels at the Yampil territorial hospital, increasing the power plant’s capacity by 50 kW.
  • Holding trainings for medical staff in a safe location on working with vulnerable groups, including internally displaced people, providing psychological first aid and preventing professional burnout.
  • Informing community residents affected by the hostilities about available social services and teaching basic psychological support skills.

“With this project, we are strengthening the well-being of three communities at once – Yampil, Svesa and Druzhba. Residents will be able to receive free medical services even during power outages. After the training, hospital staff will better understand how to interact ethically with people affected by the war, and residents themselves will become more self-reliant. Such support is simply essential in a region that suffers from Russian attacks every day”, stresses Andrii Olshanskyi, Project Manager at the Rokada Charitable Foundation.

In the long term, patient comfort and safety are expected to increase significantly, as the hospital will be able to operate steadily despite power cuts and the hospital team will provide even better services. Community residents will also know where to turn for the help they need and how to improve their mental health.

The project “Strengthening the Resilience of the Yampil Community through the Energy Autonomy of the Hospital and Improving the Competence of Staff and the Community in Working with Vulnerable Groups” is implemented by the Rokada Charitable Foundation within the “Capable and Strong: Sumy” project implemented by the East Europe Foundation.
