What we hear vs. What is actually true?

Care or Control?

Click on a situation to reveal the hidden mechanism

Situation 1
“I remember you promised to do this,” and the reply is: “You imagined it, I never said that.”
❌ This is gaslighting. You’re being made to doubt your own memory, so you stop trusting yourself and rely only on your partner’s version of events.
Situation 2
“I can see my words upset you. Let’s talk about what exactly hurt you.”
💚 This is care. Your feelings are recognized as real, even if your partner disagrees with them. This is the foundation of emotional safety.
Situation 3
“You’re too emotional, you twist everything and make a mountain out of a molehill. You need to get help.”
❌ This is gaslighting. Labeling you as “unstable” is a way to discredit your legitimate concerns.
Situation 4
“I need to know your passwords, because there are no secrets in an honest relationship.”
❌ This is control. Violating your digital privacy has nothing to do with trust. Trust means passwords *don’t* need to be shared.
Situation 5
“You can disagree with me — I respect your opinion, even if it’s different from mine.”
💚 This is respect. In healthy relationships, you have the right to your own perspective without the threat of the silent treatment or aggression.
Situation 6
“I only did it because I love you and want what’s best for you” (said after restricting your freedom).
❌ This is manipulation. Love is never used as an excuse for pain or coercion. This is a way of shifting responsibility.
