Nails, tarpaulins, polyurethane foam, and timber. Tons of construction materials on the territory of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. The Rokada Charity Foundation, with the support of the UNHCR, was among the first to provide what was necessary for the restoration of the roof of the Dormition Cathedral.
Seventy-five emergency shelter kits (ESK) were unloaded near the damaged building, including 150 tarpaulins, 75 OSB boards, 75 rolls of plastic sheeting, 1,500 wooden planks, 75 cans of polyurethane foam, 75 rolls of adhesive tape, 150 packs of self-tapping screws, and 7.5 kilograms of nails.
«Probably, the thousands of square meters of the cathedral’s roof were damaged. Our ESK sets include heavy-duty tarpaulins to cover the roof. This will help construction workers restore the architectural monument in the future», Dmytro Stadnyk noted.
The UNHCR places a special focus on the restoration of infrastructure, civilian housing, and the social protection of vulnerable populations, he said.
«Thanks to UNHCR we can do more to help everyone in need of assistance in Ukraine», Dmytro Stadnyk said.
According to him, while the 75 ESK sets were being unloaded beneath the walls of the Dormition Cathedral, another emergency team from the Rokada Foundation on Beresteiskyi Avenue in Kyiv was providing construction materials to people whose homes had been damaged by Russian strikes.
Ruslan Kermach, the chief engineer of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra National Preserve, noted that it will take more than a year to restore the roof of the damaged cathedral.
«We need to cover the roof with tarpaulins, as well as its junctions with the walls. The roof is very complex and angular; we will fill it with foam and secure the walls. Approximately 70 to 90 percent of the roof coverage area has been destroyed. Currently, the State Emergency Service is conducting emergency operations. I think it will take at least up to two years to fully restore everything», he said.
According to him, the assistance provided by the Rokada Charitable Foundation and other organizations is invaluable.
«We are very grateful to Rokada for this support and hope that these shipments will not be the last. There is truly a great, great deal of work to be done», the chief engineer noted.
