Rokada set up three shelters for displaced people in Sumy

Rokada has equipped more than a hundred additional spaces for internally displaced Ukrainians in the shelters of Sumy. These are three facilities featuring comfortable rooms, modern kitchens, inclusive bathrooms, and other spaces for a convenient stay.

“We set up one shelter from scratch and expanded two more. The renovation work lasted several months, and today we see a good result; but most importantly, more than a hundred people who lost their homes will be able to get temporary housing,” notes project manager Iryna Holliak. “In one shelter, we installed an outdoor lift for people with reduced mobility, and in another, an indoor one. But all three are inclusive.”

The pedagogical university dormitory was equipped with a focus on convenience and the possibility of future rehabilitation for people with reduced mobility, as the educational institution trains future rehabilitation specialists and ergototherapists. Technical spaces on the ground floor were completely converted into residential rooms designed to accommodate 31 people. Additionally, the foundation’s team set up inclusive bathrooms and a kitchen, providing them with the necessary appliances.

The professional school dormitory: The professional school dormitory: a shelter was already functioning on the premises. The foundation’s team converted the kitchens and bathrooms to meet inclusivity requirements, while also updating the furniture and providing the necessary household appliances in these spaces. Concurrently, Rokada renovated the common lounges and created additional residential rooms. The shelter is now designed for 46 spaces, 30 of which are newly established.

The agricultural college dormitory had also already been hosting internally displaced Ukrainians for temporary residence. However, it required renovation and the creation of additional spaces. The team set them up on the first floor of the building. For residents with reduced mobility and people with disabilities who use wheelchairs, the team installed an outdoor lift. The new rooms were equipped with furniture. The shelter is ready to accommodate another 42 people who evacuated from dangerous regions.

In total, Rokada has equipped four shelters in the Sumy region this year.

The project is being implemented with the financial support of the Ukraine Humanitarian Fund.
